"Miami Holiday Week 1" (Podcast Title)

Miami trip, through Overtown with the Número Group, headed to T.K. Story...

And other fun stuff like-
Canadian army to use games like Call of Duty to train real life soldiers;
NYC vs E Cigarettes, Alberta vs Hookahs, Affluenza vs Common Sense;
Ottawa's astronomical legal bills, Canada Jobs Grant = false advertising ;
plus Montreal's Trans World record label versus Toronto's Arc!

And some other escapist sounds from Brazil and Hawaii... So cold...

Tonight I thought we'd take a much needed winter trip down to Florida, and things came together when I picked up the Eccentric Soul Series' Overtown compilation of stuff from the Dark City label, before they lost their talent to the emerging T.K. Label run by Henry Stone, which We get into next week...

Overtown- this was the Black part of town in Deep South Miami, clearly marked by railway tracks, in the north part of the city, officially designated the "Central Negro District". Black artists working the white clubs around Miami used to finish the night off in Overtown and the area had a hopping live music night scene for years, until, and this is an oft recurring theme in Black neighbourhoods in the 1960s, the government decided to build not 1 but 2 highways through Overtown. From a population of over forty thousand, fewer than nine thousand remain.

I also want to mention the limestone lounge online is a great place to eavesdrop on some interesting conversations about Miami's music history.

TRAX:
*Samba Squad- Xango
*Mike Mahlini Scott- Sands, Rainbows Over Paradise, South Sea Lullabyes
*The Phantoms- White Silver Sands, Crossfire
* les Skyliners- Wabash Blues, Je Suis D'accord, Wipeout
*T Birds - Broken Hearted Blues, Thunder rock
*Huevos Rancheros- Some Way to Run a Railroad
*Atomic 7- Guitar For Sale, /Mimi, Queen of Bathurst, / Lessing, not gouging/ Phantom 101
*Amazing Royal Crowns- Shivering in the Corner

-now, the Arc vs Trans World face-off... The same l.p.! Same recording, released on each label! Montreal vs Toronto... To be honest, both labels pumped out terrible pressings, and both labels were adverse to giving the listener / customer any details of the record they were holding. Like the real low budget American labels like Pickwick, Arc and Trans World were more likely to advertise their other records which had absolutely nothing to do with each other. For instance, an organ recital lp might mention polka and country lps on the back cover without mentioning any details about each recording.
Anyhow, Hank Ballard's Twist song had some tie to Miami, and I thought this would be as good a night as any to look back at these Canadian "twistploitation" albums... By the way, the band is alternately billed as The Harlem Twisters and as The Original Twist Group... Same recording! Decent early sixties party record all the same, low fidelity notwithstanding...
Now back to the track list...

TRAX - Cont'd-
Harlem Twisters- Peppermint Twist Time, Pony Time, Crazy Twist (Trans World)
The Original Twist Group- The Twist, Pony Time (Arc)

Now off to Miami for real... The last tour to Miami was heavy on Wayne Cocharane so I only played one of his cuts tonight and went heavy on some Florida sounds I haven't played before, like that Deep City label collection...

Wayne Cochrane - Hoochie Coochie Man
Sammy Ambrose- Welcome to Dreamsville - he also recorded a song called "The Canadian Twist" with the Afro Beats. hard, short life for Sammy...

Pearly Queen- Quit Jivin
Beginning of the End- Funky Nassau
Helene Smith - I Am Controlled By Your Love
Johnny Killer and the Dynamites- I Don't Need Help
Freda Gray and the Rocketeers- Stay Away from my Johnny

Frank Williams and the Rocketeers- Good Thing Part 1
the Moovers- One Little Dance
Deep City Band- Am I A Good Man? (Instrumental)
Paul Kelly - 509
Clarence Reid - Dancing With Nobody But You, Babe/ 25 Miles/ Doggone It

All The People - Cramp Your Style

Celebration of life and the passing through, looking back, waiting for what tomorrow brings.

In Memory of Vincent Twight 1947-2013.

I usually do a party set for the week between Christmas and New Years. I did it this year, but had to start with a tribute to my dad who passed away the day before, on Sunday December 29th...
Rest in Peace
Rock in Peace
Roll in Peace
My dad was a big inspiration and kick started my life long obsession with music. He wasn't always delighted with that, but he supported the show, and I thought I could put a decent tribute to him out on the air. I will always miss him but he hated sentimentality so I will leave it at that and hope the music tribute was a good listen to anyone tuning in.
Mashmakhan seemed like a good segue into some party sounds for the season...

Image credit: The Starry Night "De sterrennacht" Vincent van Gogh 1889

Van Gogh's night sky is a field of roiling energy. Below the exploding stars, the village is a place of quiet order. Connecting earth and sky is the flamelike cypress, a tree traditionally associated with graveyards and mourning. But death was not ominous for van Gogh. "Looking at the stars always makes me dream," he said, "Why, I ask myself, shouldn't the shining dots of the sky be as accessible as the black dots on the map of France? Just as we take the train to get to Tarascon or Rouen, we take death to reach a star." (Quote from http://www.wikipaintings.org/en/vincent-van-gogh/the-starry-night-1889)

This time out I talked about the Wattstax and Soul to Soul films, both documenting soul music and life in Watts and in Ghana respectively. I also wanted to describe a bit about the movie "That's the Way of the World" which went nowhere commercially until the band in the movie, cast as simply The Band, had a monster hit as EWF with Shining Star. I thought it MIT be worth pointing out the difference between budget movies and "B Movies" which seem to have little regard for plot lines and such...

"Big up the back up" (Podcast title)

WARNING: Audio file is comb filtering & over-compressing please only listen to as a reference - our apologies.

Celebrating back up singers and backing bands stepping out and doing their own thing... Inspired by the movie which I have yet to see, 20 Feet to Stardom, or was that 29 Steps, anyhow, I thought this would be a good idea, also to feature Jennifer Warnes, related to all this insofar as later back up singers for Leonard Cohen (2009?) inspired the movie which inspired this back-up edition of Veritable Infusion...

Also talked a little about Cathy Smith tying together The Hawks, The Good Brother, and Gordon Lightfoot...

As well as fellow Canadians Doug Riley (Dr. Music) and Lisa Dal Bello, whose mid-seventies CBC radio transcription disc I brought out for this occasion...

As well as talking a bit about Leon Russell, a back up player whose own later backing band The Gap Band put out some heavy funk on their own...
